Hynes House
Minneapolis
The
Hynes / Wallace House was designed for Dr. John Hynes by his
wife Martha, when she was the fiancée of the doctor.
The house was built in 1907 on University Avenue near Bedford
Street, in a mix of English Cottage and early modern house
architectural styles. The couple moved into the house right
after their honeymoon, and the house also served as his medical
office for all of his professional career. In 2000, the vacant
house awaited a scheduled demolition, but Dr Hynes’ grand-daughter,
Julie Wallace, did not want to see her grandfather's house
erased from memory. She assembled a save-the-house campaign,
bought the house, and moved it to a nearby vacant lot. Ms.
Wallace then undertook an extensive rehab project to return
the house, including Dr. Hynes' medical office space, to its
original architectural character. The project received a Preservation
Award from The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission
in 2004.
